Featured Solo Exhibition: Primal Renderings by Sandra Yagi

& Group Exhibition: Genus, Species

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: San Francisco, CA —Modern Eden Gallery is pleased to announce “Primal Renderings”, new oil paintings by San Francisco artist Sandra Yagi. “Primal Renderings” will be Yagi’s first solo exhibition in San Francisco. The opening reception will be held at Modern Eden on Saturday, November 12 from 7-10pm. The exhibition will be on display through December 4, 2011 and is free and open to the public.

Yagi’s recent oil paintings are fueled by contemporary culture, human folly and an obsessive curiosity for the macabre. Her work is inspired by the natural sciences as well as by the classical drawing techniques of the old masters, including anatomical studies. Yagi’s recent paintings incorporate anatomical imagery to explore the human psychological condition, such as cutaway skulls portraying basic human drives and the thin veneer of humanity overlaying our animal nature.

Yagi was raised in suburban Denver Colorado, the oldest of four children. She loved science from an early age, especially biology, and drawing. Yagi’s Japanese-American parents instilled in her an ethics of getting a “useful” education. Interned during WW II, her family – like many others of that generation – valued stability and mainstream values. So, bowing to family pressure, Yagi obtained an MBA and worked in corporate world for 27 years. But she never gave up her vision of being an artist and continued to draw and paint, while holding down a full time job in finance.

She relocated for her employer and moved to Los Angeles, and then to San Francisco. The creative and eclectic climate in San Francisco is a catalyst for bringing about the current direction of her work. She left the corporate life behind for good in 2008 and became a full time artist. She now works out of her studio in the South of Market neighborhood of San Francisco.

In conjunction with “Primal Renderings”, Modern Eden will be showcasing a group exhibition entitled “Genus, Species” featuring works inspired by scientific botanical and anatomical illustrations with artists’ own unique twist on the traditional style. Exhibiting artists include: Robert Bowen, Chelsea Brown, Chamber Made, Steven Suiter , Cory Benhatzel, Sheri Jurnecka, David Camisa, Layil Umbralux, Katie Bacigalupi, Matthew J. Price, Archer, Genessa Kealoha, Sean Sczepanik, Alison Trujillo, MJ Lindo, Max Kauffman, Lacey Bryant, Tiffany L. Pascal, Emi Slade, Michael Foley, and Angela Willetts.

Located in San Francisco’s historic North Beach, Modern Eden was opened by local artists, Bradley Platz and Kim Larson in June 2010. Modern Eden Gallery has quickly become one of San Francisco’s most exciting and attractive destinations for art. Modern Eden showcases talent-driven art by San Francisco’s top emerging and established artists. Modern Eden focuses on figurative and illustrative paintings in genres ranging from realism to surrealism. I clogged up my production tables with 5 days of coughing and oozing-so as you can imagine, I’m really under the gun this week. With big news, big shows, ang big work on the way….please be patient while I bring all web data up to date and organized.
I have methods to my madness, so trust me-its cool hunnybunny.

Most of you may know by now, but I am an extremely avid user of social media as well. My facebook page for example is constantly booming and my new fan site is streaming photos, press, and show goods from this moment on. (It’s fast upload and easy interface that places this site the highest on my list of information sites.) Consider it a virtual catalog if you will-until the time when the master catalog is published online-it serves very well to display previous collections and projects! That being said I’m sure its safe to say I.m obviously dissolved into buisness for the time being, with a calender this busy I’m going to need to keep focus and stay disciplined.

It was very difficult for me to accept the closing of summer. I absolutley adore fall, but I’ve always been greedy of memorys of hot sandy beaches and cold beers next to swimming pools. Obviously I’ve got a healthy obsession with the water-but now I’ve also got a little buddy to indulge in water with (the compulsion grows ever worse)
However, fall is absolutley intoxicating. The colors and smells, the Michigan falls with bountiful apples and pumpkins, and still…the cold beers by the fire side I’m okay with the ending of summer if it means the pagan festivities are begining!

The cooling of the season always relaxes me and brings about an all together sense of closure and concentration. The close of the summer festival and overall 11′ pop collections gives way for the rise of my Antiquarium collections and displays. Now I may have explained my concept of the Antiquarium before, but just in case you are unsure.. My Antiquarium is a traveling museum of sorts, it is a total cross-over display were I exhibit my taxidermy, macabre’, and antiqued natural history works of art. This alternate display allows me to let loose my demons and bone collector nature, I mean, you’ve got have your creative outlets. I’ll be selling pickles insects, mummified animal pendants and voodoo dolls amongst grotesque sea life and horrific sculpted works. I was always a special effects junkie in my earlier years, so a return to my roots really does me good.
So that being said, for the month of October, expect to see a wave of darker works and painted creepy furnitures. Yes, I even have some creepy furniture   My pop works will still be available for sale through my etsy site and various gallerys around Earth. To the left hand side here there are links to sites where you can buy my *FAbulous works (if I don’t say so myself).

I will have a new piece available for sale at the upcoming “Urban Roots” show happening at gallery 323 East in Royal Oak, Mi, Sat. September 10th 2011. Its a very good line-up, and I’m quite dissapointed I will not be able to make the opening However my absence is well justified, my dear long-time friends are getting married, and I am super duper happy for them *heart bubbles*

So as you may expect, I have nothing but praise for this up and coming bi-annual craft collective! The crowd throughout the event was steady and friendly, the drinks delcious, and the ambiance very attractive. Saw a few familiar favorites and indulged in many of the vendors wares- tapping into my own earnings for money very well spent. I am proud of my newest additions to my collection, and Im proud to say many of my own creations found new homes to enchant as well.
Some vendors of particular interest to me were the illuminated and utterly fantastic, robots of Tin Angry Men. Artist Cre Fuller utilizes spare industrial guts, coffee machines and tinted glass parts, electrical strands of touch lamp goodness, and a creative style to pull it all together. It is truly an honor to exhibit with him; not only does our work compliment each others beautifully, he draws quite the wide-eyed crowd with ease. Also featured were many textile and paper artists; Sherri of Sparklepants Industrys had for sale some wonderful shadow framed paper scenes with pinwheels, birds, and the essential soul of the modern craft movement. Her works hang like contained little peaceful moments, of which most should strive to hold dear!
Recycled licence plates chopped into phrases and custom adornments, skillfully painted ceramic vessels, and another crowd favorite-recycled jars and collected glass containers fabulously lit up the fair with golden bulbs and chandelier grace. It was a sight indeed.

The DIYpsi event will appear again in December, so should you like to see these vendors in person ag as in (and many others) I suggest you pay the cultural hub of ypsilsnti a visit

~Next on my schedule of Detroit sightings is my inclusion in the Rust Belt Markets “Dream Cruis weekend”. While not hosting any official DC promotion, the market is located squarely on 9 mile and Woodward Ave, and should draw a tremendous crowd. The space will be abnormally packed with some of the areas hottest artists, so I encourage all you culture junkies looking to get your hands dirty this weekend-dont miss out on this fantastic event!

Titled “Savaged Beast”, this piece illustrates the violent nature of sex and passionate love, highlighting a brilliant colored prehistoric mollusk-still twisted up in the severed arms of its latest lover. I am very fond of this creatures eyes…the golden brown richness and sultry glare pull the viewer in for closer look. This piece will be available at the special price of 175$ and as always, is sold ready to hang or sit and is signed with my signature smoking mushroom symbol.
The brand BRAND new work for this weekends excitment are really going to turn heads! A pair of pop-trophy heads mounted atop show-stopping electric painted plaques, this duo of cornial carnage will take center stage at my table, so be sure to act fast if you intend to add these coveted pieces to your collection! There is a teaser image of the painted bases, I may be coaxed into revealing the creaturess before the show…but no promises!
