Deep Sea Delights

Ahhhh…the first changing leaves of Autumn…my favorite time of year! I am pleased to say I have recently returned from a much needed and well deserved (I can say that right?!)vacation. I made the pilgrimage back to the lake cabin of my youth, where I taught both my husband and my son the ways of the angler amidst the sublime weather and the smell of boat fuel. Yes, I caught many fish, and my husband built a fire to make the Gods themselves jealous. The stars, the trees, the loons……ahhhhhh, everything was perfect.

That being said, my return home to the lab was equally as pleasurable. I spent a large bit of my vacation time shoveling the discarded charred thoughts of my brain furnace (that’s right, I said brain furnace) out of most every crevice, and really made a lot of room for new ideas, new projects, and new directions to take my recent work. I don’t think the purge could have come at a better time, when I opened the door to my home awaiting me was my much anticipated shipment of taxidermy materials!

Taxidermy materials you say? WTF?

Well, I’ve been doing my share of material hoarding the past two weeks. As I had said before, this month is primarily dedicated to building up “stock” and getting the beasts of my lab ready for public display. October, November, and December are all rapidly filling up with shows…..so I’m hiding away in my subterranean laboratory doctoring up as many monsters as I can! Of these monsters, I have been contacted by the infamous Mr. Jerry Vile to do some taxidermy mounts trailing over the next month or so. I figured I would get the blood moving through my slice-em-dice-em neurons by sharpening my skills on micro-animals; birds, mice, chipmunks….you know, tiny things that have the misfortune of dying anywhere in my lawn lol. So far I have a freezer full, and finally..FINALLY..the preservatives have made there way here (and just in time…my pizza rolls needed to go somewhere). Of course, and as usual, I have given myself 8,000 things to do… but soon enough pictures of my “prep-mounts” should be popping up on here among the squid, lamps, and circus freaks.

Annnnyways, here are some pictures of some developing works born today and soon to mature. The theme here is as you may have guessed, Deep Sea life, and both of these animals will be mounted atop back-lit bases to give that eerie submersible spotlight glow!

P.S. The angler is being fitted for dentures, until then…enjoy the gums!  lol

Creature Feature: Citron Squid!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Painted in lord only knows how many layers of citrons, greens, and electric blues ..this creature is absolutely stunning to stare at. The shiny periwinkle eyes pull you into the “stare”, and when mounted, are positioned so as to be looking back at you!

The base measures in 7″ length, 5″ in width, and stands just over 2″ tall. It has been sanded, painted, and sealed in numerous layers of water and fade proof polyurethane so it can withstand most any abuse. And of course, the heavy coats of sealer make this a desirable piece of art for bathrooms and kitchens!

This fabulous specimen is available on my Etsy site, and is very affordable @ the light price tag of 100$ (and check this…free shipping!)

Thanks for viewing!

Late Night in the Lab.

Well, so far it’s only 9pm, but rest assured knowing I’ll be up all night working up some beasts for my ETSY shop. It’s looking a little sparse over there!

Hmmm…what else?! Well, the “Trophy Lamp” prototype passed the barrage of tests I put it through, so this is very hopeful indeed! I have plans for 3 of them for the first run, these will be released via my Etsy (presumably near the close of Sept.) and will be a very stylish AND affordable. Don’t be mislead, I don’t plan on doing much in the way of functional home furnishings…but considering I wanted one for myself I figured spread the love a little before I move on to another whim!

Knocking a few customs out of the park, I have finally cleared out enough room around the studio to begin on the larger monsters clamoring to escape my skull. I look forward to a duo of trophy head mounts, a finished smaller diorama, and the cage creature. This may sound like a lot of work (and it is), but I am fiercely dedicated to lifting this career higher off the ground, and a little cut into my sleep and social life isn’t going to kill me *knock on wood*…….lol. Plus it’s a LOT of fun.

Below are some shots of some super fresh Etsy work in the finishing process..

On the subject of paint chips and glue

My goodness. What a month. To be honest I kind of just realized its September, and it almost scared me….really?! That was fast. It is true time flies when you are having fun…but it also flys by when your working, or sleeping, or just living. It just flys by,  period.

I’m really liking my temporary studio set up. I am having a hell of a time controlling humidity in my previous work space, so I have begun the process of relocation into a more professional and more climate controlled studio. In the mean time I’ve taken control of my dining room and scattered my surprisingly organized mess all over the tables, counters, and shelves. The natural light is wonderful, and I can jam my music, fold laundry, and slang paint all in the same room at the same time. I LOVE it!

Nothing like ~multitasking, ha.

~It seems once you have kids…this is a fundamental practice that will make or break you, lol.

Starting off the month on the right foot, I’ve officially stocked the local favorite, “Detroit Comics” in downtown Ferndale! If you are in the area, or feel so motivated to drop by, please have a look over the works on display there and feel free to contact me with any comments or questions. If you are interested in sales, you may contact me directly at “thesquidsucker@yahoo.com” or speak with the available staff.

I must say, the “Kingpin” Kraken (Surreal Trophy Piece) is proudly hanging in the gallery and looks absolutely stunning! There are several very affordable pieces, and of course there is also the snazzy Art-O-Mat art vending machine, and many great comics and zines to be thumbed through!

Other than that, This month is primarily dedicated to establishing a new batch of monster goods (to peddle of course), get some more local spaces like 323 in Royal Oak a solid slice of squid sculpture pie, and concentrate my energy on special orders and new techniques. I’ve got some really cool dioramas and displays to finish up, and some very interesting new paintings that highlight my absurd love for classic science fiction. Throw in a few charitable pieces and I’ve got myself another zipping past month, ……ahhh well…I’ll sleep when I’m dead.

Here’s a couple snapshots of a some works growing around the lab, note the giant cage (it is soon to be filled!) enjoy!
