Coasters, Coasters, and more Coasters – Oh MY!

Ahhhh, fall. Quite possibly one of the best times of year, and undoubtedly..a busy time for an artist like me. This year is no exception and as anticipated I find myself stepping off of a 5 week creative blur with several impressive new pieces to share with you, each different and unique in it’s own unusual way.

Kicking off September right, my dream creature for La Luz de Jesus Gallery’s  much anticipated “Coaster Show”. For those of you outside Hollywood, CA: La Luz de Jesus Gallery has quite the reputation for being an ever-evolving arena of ground-breaking and original art shows, bizarre pop culture festivities, creative book signings, and yes,… even rogue taxidermy demos. Seeking to outdo themselves a second time around (the first show was a smash success of course, but why settle) the La Luz team invited virtually everyone from the fine art circuit to accept, tinker, and return what would later be over 1,500 mini masterpieces of lowbrow coasterific art. But why Coasters you ask? To coincide with LA’s Beer week of course, and to remind the world of the inherent beauty of approachable, hilarious, absurd art for drunken patrons sake. This is my favorite kind of show: over-the-top and sometimes, even under the belt line.

Here’s my contribution; a dreamy Raven I dreamed up, aptly named: “Dream Raven” (I know, I know..I’m a master with words.)

Double-headed Weekend of Oddity and Wonder!

Image

Kicking off this weekend is much anticipated “Rogue Taxidermy Biannual” at La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Hollywood, CA which features the most groundbreaking artists working in the controversial medium today.

Quoted from La Luz’s website; “This is not your granddady’s taxidermy: road kill is a central part of the “recycled” philosophy of this unusual and enlightening exhibition, as are discarded livestock, destroyed nuisance animals, casualties of the pet trade and animals that have expired from natural causes. Other sculptures utilize taxidermy techniques in an unorthodox way to fashion fantastic beasts from everyday materials–even the recycled pelts of toy stuffed animals. Elements of technology and decoration combine to create ornaments that approach high art, not only in craft, but in concept.

Materials and even species are mixed, helping to broaden presumptive definitions.
Pieces in this exhibition span Steam Punk to Rococo -from playful to elegant.

On Saturday, May 3rd from 2 until 5 PM, Katie, Divya, and Lauren will present a live taxidermy demonstration using prepared and raw materials as they answer questions about the artform.

For all you midwestern folks, I’ve also got something good for you too!

Underwater lava flows, predatory dinosaurs, and little poems to drift off to sleep…. In short, I’m busy.

As if I ever STOPPED being busy..ha!

Amongst the herd of cycloptic/multi-eyed, rainbow colored creatures being released this summer is a giant taxidermy/sculpture dinosaur bust, a massive-eyed mutant piece titled “It who makes the Space, makes the Time”, my revised LED-illuminated “Moon” creature, and the most incredible “Atomic Squid battles the Nuclear Submarine” diorama that ever claimed to exist, or probably ever existed. (BUT ~I’ll save that last one for my next post…enjoy pics of the former for now ;} )

In addition, soon I will make my public announcement of my participation on a Wild network television program, as well as debut a brand new artist website, online store, T-Shirt design(s), and more!

As usual, stay cool Planet Earth~+~Keep Watching!

“It’s What’s Inside that Counts” ~Taxidermic Sculpture hybrid artist: Emi Slade 2012

Follow my tumblr here to stay connected ( http://theartofemislade.tumblr.com/ ) , and visit my taxidermic design side-project for more original works and project information: ( http://m.facebook.com/pages/Haus-of-Imy-ut-a-taxidermy-design-project/223128647767800?id=223128647767800&_rdr )

Haus of Imy-Ut ( Tips on pronunciation; “house of Eme Ut”. The “U” in “ut” is heavy and deep-as in “up”. Its both elegant and guttural, ancient and contemporary…….well, At least I think so anyway ♥)

“Haus of Imy-ut” is a taxidermy design project created in early 2012 by sculptural artist Emily Slade. The purpose of this project is to explore the world of taxidermy through a new design lens and create both conceptual and decorative works of natural-origin art. The content of these works varies greatly from piece to piece, and swings from innocent to vile depending on the animal(s) used in the creation. With a strong focus on ethical collection, non-toxic production, and individuality expressed by the subjects-each piece from the H.O.I. collection is a work of soulful attachment and human interpretation.”

That being stated, here are images to my completed cross-over piece. I was thinking of signing the piece with the new seal for “H.O.Iu” or to stick with my standard smoking mushroom. I figured this piece should probably still retain my original signature as I hope it serves to expose to a new area a representative of my career/styles. Its horrible, and amazing, and nightmarish.    I’m proud.
